HSCS Update Feb 11

Good day Holy Spirit families!

It’s so cold.
How cold is it?
It’s so cold, the polar bears are wearing fur coats!

Well it has been a frosty week this week, but I have to commend our students and staff for their fortitude and patience. A week of indoor recesses is a long week! My message is coming out early this week as tomorrow (Friday, Feb. 12) is a PD day for staff and we will be busy in sessions and meetings. There will be no school for students. Monday is also a No School day as we spend some time with our loved ones on Family Day.

Next week is a pretty busy week:

Monday – No School
Tuesday – Shrove Tuesday
• Students will each receive a donut and chocolate milk. Usually, our beloved Knights of Columbus come in to serve a pancake supper, but this year we cannot gather in the same way. Next best thing – donuts! All students will receive one free donut and milk should they choose to accept it.
Wednesday – Ash Wednesday
• This is a very important day for us as we will begin our 40 day period of Lent in preparation of Easter. Students will participate in a virtual Ash Wednesday Liturgy in their classroom.
• What is Lent?
o The season of Lent is a Catholic liturgical season consisting of forty days of fasting, prayer, and penitence beginning at Ash Wednesday and concluding at sundown on Holy Thursday. The official liturgical color for the season of Lent is violet. (https://www.aboutcatholics.com/beliefs/lent-in-the-catholic-church/)
• The Brief Project will be happening again this year. Holy Spirit Catholic School and all Evergreen Catholic Schools will be collecting unused, packaged underwear for the Catholic Social Services, Day of Mercy to help those in need. When you are out and about, pick up an extra pair and send them into the school.
o Just curious? Why are underwear sold in pairs when there is only one?
Friday – I Read Canadian
• We will be reading literature written by Canadian authors this day and throughout the week, celebrating Canadian writing. This is a soft kick off to our Literacy week that will wrap up on Feb. 26.

Some other things that are coming up…

Feb. 24 – Pink Shirt Day
• Hot dog lunch (free for all students who choose to have one)
Feb. 26 – Literacy day and virtual pep rally
Mar. 3 – Early Dismissal
Mar. 6 – PD Day
Mar. 10 – Pizza lunch (free)
Mar. 12 – Report Cards go home

• Fundraising is still going strong for our outdoor classroom.
o Read – a – Thon packages will be sent home next week.
o Last year, students read over 4000 pages! Boston Pizza receipts are still being collected.
o Start collecting your bottles! The fundraising committee will be collecting bottles at the school beginning in March. It will be a drive by drop off conveniently located at the front entrance for parents to bring bagged only bottles. All proceeds will go to the Outdoor Classroom – we are almost there!!
• Holy Spirit Catholic School is accepting registrations for next year. Let us know if you have a little one you would like to bring to our school. Kindergarten registration can be done through our website – www.hscs.ca . Our confirmation forms for Holy Spirit families will go out around spring break.

Have a wonderful Valentine’s Day this weekend, and a super Family Day on Monday – free fishing! Stay warm!
